Installed flooring costs by area, material and region — LVP through hardwood, including subfloor prep and old-floor removal.
Estimated total cost
$9,200 – $18,400
1,000 sq ft · Mid-range · National average
$9 – $18 per sq ft
$3–$8 per square foot installed for LVP and laminate, $8–$16 for engineered wood and standard tile, and $16–$35 for solid hardwood and premium tile. For 1,000 sq ft that is roughly $3,000 to $35,000 depending on material.
LVP is waterproof, cheaper, and the right answer for basements, kitchens and rentals. Solid hardwood can be refinished several times, lasts generations and carries more weight with buyers. It is a use-case decision more than a quality one.
Floating floors often can go over sound, flat vinyl or tile — it saves the tear-out cost but raises the floor height, which affects doors and transitions. Never float over anything soft, wet, or that you suspect contains asbestos.
